Merry Strikes-mas to All!

At 6 am (EST) this morning, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters began a bold coast-to-coast strike against Amazon at warehouses in New York City, Atlanta, Skokie, Illinois, Southern California, and San Francisco. Teamsters and workers at the Amazon SMF1 facilities out by the Sacramento airport have organized a picket in coordination with the strike that will run day and night from now until Saturday at 6am. You can stop by to show your solidarity support anytime. See the map below for information on parking and the location of the two picket areas at the complex.

(And let’s consider NOT ordering those last-minutes gifts to be delivered by Amazon Prime for the holidays. Consult the Labor 411 Holiday Gift Guide for union-made gift ideas that you don’t have to buy on Amazon.)

Starbucks Workers United also announced on Tuesday morning that workers have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike—98%!—to protest hundreds of still-unresolved unfair labor practice charges and win a strong foundational framework for union contracts. The workers haven’t decided when they will go on strike yet, but there is an informational call today at 5:30 pm (8:30 EST) for allies who want to get plugged into this nationwide effort. You can RSVP for the zoom link and read more on the strike authorization at the Starbucks Workers United website.

And workers with UNITE HERE Local 2 in San Francisco who have been on strike since September may be on the way to an important victory, with workers reaching a tentative agreement with Marriott today that offers wage increases, health insurance safeguards, and staffing protections. The tentative agreement received a unanimous recommendation from the bargaining committee of about 100 rank-and-file workers, and will be voted on by the 2,000 Marriott workers today. But UNITE HERE workers are still on strike at Hilton and Hyatt, so if you’re in the Bay Area, think about joining their picket lines in solidarity!
